Jonas demonstrates courage through his words, and
he shows this on page 97 when he attempts to take a stand against the absence of
choice, “’Well…’ Jonas had to stop and think it through.
‘If everything’s the same, then there aren’t any choices! I want to wake
up in the morning and decide things!’”
This shows his courage because he could just go along with the sameness
as everyone else does, but he chooses to question it for the well- being of his
entire community. He also proves his bravery through his actions on page 155, when it says, “It was
possible what they planned. Barely possible. If it failed, he would very likely
be killed. But what did that matter?
If he stayed, his life was no longer worth living.”
This shows his bravery because he knows the personal consequences, but he
still does what he believes in because he can’t stand wondering what if for the
rest of his life.
Others think that Jonas is very honorable and courageous, and this is
revealed on page62, when The Chief Elder says,”‘ He has shown all of the
qualities that a Receiver must have.’…’Intelligence ...Integrity…
courage… wisdom… Capacity to see beyond.’” This is proved by her among the other
elders when they announce it in front of the entire community at the ceremony of
twelve.
Jonas establishes his selflessness through his thoughts on page 99 “He
found that he was angry, now: irrationally angry at his group mates, that they
were satisfied with their lives which had none of the vibrance his own was
taking on. And he was angry with himself that he could not change that for
them.” This shows his
selflessness because he could try to just keep all of the true pleasures of his
life to himself but, he finds himself wishing that he could share his new found
happiness with his friends and family.
And finally, Jonas’s appearance may seem to be no different than everyone
else, but on the inside he is weighed down with all of the memories that the
Giver has transmitted to him of pain and loneliness.
All of these characteristics come together to make Jonas the hero that he
is and give him the ability to be the new Receiver of Memory.
